Day 13 - Your Environment

Day 13: Your Environment

Look around you. What is in your environment that shouldn't be? It's important to remember that every action we take has the potential to harm or benefit our environment. Choose to be environmentally responsible by cleaning up your surroundings, reducing, reusing and recycling whenever possible, and tell others about the importance of keeping our environment and oceans clean - not just for us but for our animal friends too!

Day 2 - Teaching

Day 2: Teaching

Dolphin Research Center teaches the public about marine mammals and the environment. Throughout the year, we welcome students from across the globe who are interested in our teachings. Through our on-site research, our relationships with the animals, the extensive student learning opportunities we offer, and our rich history, DRC has a great deal of knowledge to share with the world. Visit us as a guest or a student and learn a great deal about our animal family and their wild counterparts. Whether you choose to spend a day at DRC, take part in an interactive program like swim with the dolphin, or take part in our one week DolphinLab programs – you are sure to walk away with a stronger connection to the animals.#iHeartDRC #DolphinResearchCenter

Dolphin Research Center Photo-A-Day Challenge

Dolphin Research Center's Photo-A-Day Challenge starts January 1, 2016!

Start the new year with Dolphin Research Center by participating in our very first Photo-a-Day Challenge. To continue teaching, learning, and caring for marine mammals and the environment, we’ve created a new way for our supporters to become ambassadors for our flippered family members. The best part is that you can do it from home!

The Photo-A-Day challenge starts on January 1st. There will be 31 challenges, one for each day of the month, and all you need to do is share a photo or video that relates to the daily subject on your Facebook, Twitter or Instagram pages. Use the hashtag #IHeartDRC so that everyone’s images and posts will be united!  If you don’t mind us reposting your images on our social media, go ahead and also add #DolphinResearchCenter. (We’ll always credit you for the photos we repost.)  Whether you use photos or video that you took while visiting DRC or creatively use something from your life at home, it will be fun to see how you connect your image to the each day’s challenge.

This graphic shows you all of the challenge topics so you can start thinking about your photos. Don’t forget to post the challenge to your own pages, so we can follow your page and daily posts as well.  Whether you likefollow, or gram with us online, we cannot wait for this new venture and the chance to share DRC pride with you – our fintastic fans, friends, and family.

Did You Know? (Conservation Tip)

Using less gas saves money and the environment.

If you want to save gas, not to mention money from a speeding ticket and increased insurance rates, don’t speed. Slowing down gains two to four miles per gallon more than zooming everywhere like a racecar driver.

Avoid the "drag strip" mentality. Getting to your destination safely is the winning goal and gunning it only wastes more gas.

Keep your tires properly inflated. Can you imagine how much harder it is to move your car with flat tires? Under inflated tires waste gas and decrease the life of the tire. Overinflated tires also lessen tread life and can be dangerous.

Remove all unnecessary items inside the vehicle. (The bowling ball you left in the car last week, or the 20-pound bag of dog food.) Extra weight in the vehicle wastes gas.)

Plan your trips carefully. Combine several short trips to do all your errands. Avoid traveling during rush hours if possible. This reduces fuel-consumption patterns such as starting and stopping and numerous idling periods. Consider joining a car pool.

Consider a TerraPass to compensate for the carbon dioxide created by your car-
Click here to find out more about TerraPass.

Carbon dioxide emissions cause coral bleaching and death. Coral reefs are “fish nurseries” which produce food for many other ocean species. Less coral = less fish = less food for marine mammals.

In the United States, we use about 400 million gallons of gas a day.
Let’s decrease that number!
